A brief biography of the inquisitive scientist Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov

Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov Ivan-Asen Hristov Zlatarov, was born in Haskovo on February 4, 1885, just a few months before Haskovo joined the Principality of Bulgaria as part of Eastern Rumelia. His academic path was long and varied, starting at Sofia University, continuing in Geneva, where he graduated in chemistry in 1907. Zlatarov briefly taught at the Plovdiv Boys' High School in 1908. In the same year, he also received the title "Doctor of Physics and Chemistry" from the University of Grenoble. Zlatarov's love for food research was born in Munich, where he specialized in "Nutrition and Forensic Medicine". From 1922, Zlatarov was an associate professor of biochemistry at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the SU, and from 1935 - a full professor. He was the chairman of the Union of Chemists. To talk only about Zlatarov's career behind the chair and in front of the students would be to ignore all his other interests, and they are all too remarkable. He is a writer, publicist, poet, human rights activist and literary critic. A person with very deep scientific and social interests, Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov embodies the brightest manifestations of Bulgarian academic history. The all-round development of the professor can be seen both in his diverse public interests and in his highly specialized field - biochemistry and chemistry. In his entire career, the scientist has over 660 publications. The public initiatives of the professor are varied and interesting. He suggests introducing a separate discipline in schools to guide students to proper nutrition. We can only guess how popular the professor's research would be these days, when proper nutrition is such a trendy topic. Another little-known fact is that in 1934 Zlatarov proposed changing the name from Orhanie to Botevgrad, as some of the surviving Chetniks almost reached the city after the battle of Okolchitsa. He served in the Balkan and Inter-Allied Wars as a sanitary volunteer and also in the First World War assisted in several military hospitals before being appointed to the wartime Committee for Economic Care and Public Providence. Prof. Asen Zlatarov and other prominent public figures founded "Rodno Radio" - a union of radio amateurs in Bulgaria. He also took part in the first long-wave broadcast, carried out by the state radio transmitter in Sofia. He opened the show with a speech and recited Debelyanov's poems. "There is not a lecture, not a speech, not even a textbook, not even an article in the newspaper, where he does not emphasize in a direct or indirect way that life is the main good and it should be served," says Svetozar Zlatarov, son of the professor. Everywhere he deals with how to live and how to make life better. It is here that one must look for his humanism. His versatility is a manifestation of the same aspiration - to move humanity forward and for people to have more holidays. In our scientific and cultural space, Asen Zlatarov remains one of the most authoritative progressive thinking personalities of the 20th century. The favorite of the Bulgarian academic world became an occasion for the "Chas" newspaper to publish an article in memory of the professor. The author defines him as the most popular person in Bulgarian science and the reviving Bulgarian society, the most loved, the most human. The website "Bulgarian History" and the website of the BNR were used for the construction. Brother SS, Master Degree, Lodge "Prof. Asen Zlatarov" Date: 20.11.2021
